Safer Kentucky Act may have unintended consequences WCHS

ASHLAND,KY(WCHS)—TheSaferKentuckyActisnowlaw,followingavetoandavetooverridebytheGeneralAssembly.ThegoalofthebillistostrengthenKentucky’scriminallaw,butinstead,itmayhavesomeunintendedconsequences.
“FromwhatIhavereadandunderstandIbelievethatiswhatisgoingtohappen,”saidLynnChilders,ExecutiveDirectorofCARES,anonprofitthattakescareoftheneedsofthehomelessinEasternKentucky.
ShehasmixedfeelingsabouttheSaferKentuckyAct.
“Iftheyaregoingtomakeencampmentsorcampingoutillegalthatisgoingtocriminalizehomelessness,”saidChilders.
GovernorAndyBeshearvetoedthebill,buttheGeneralAssemblyvotedtooverridetheveto.
“Hethinksthatwedon’thavethecapacityinourprisons.Wedon’thavethemoneytopayforit,andthatwearecriminalizinghomelessness.All3ofthosearecompletelyfalse,”saidRepresentativeJaredBauman,(R)Louisville,thebillsponsor.
“Ithinkitishardtotreateverybodyunderonelaw,especiallywhenyoudon’tknowt
