FRANKFORT,Ky.(AP)—RepublicanlawmakersinKentuckyonFridayremovedtheDemocraticgovernorfromanyrolefillingfutureU.S.Senatevacancies—amovesupporterssaidwasunrelatedtorecentscrutinyaboutthehealthofthestate’sseniorsenator,RepublicanleaderMitchMcConnell.
TheGOPsupermajorityLegislatureeasilyoverrodeGov.AndyBeshear’svetoofthemeasure.ThelegislationcallsforaspecialelectiontofillanySenatevacancyfromtheBluegrassState.Thespecialelectionwinnerwouldholdtheseatfortheremainderoftheunexpiredterm.
“ThepeopleshoulddecidewhoaUnitedStatessenatorisbyelectionalways,”HouseMajorityFloorLeaderStevenRudy,aRepublicanandthebill’sleadsponsor,saidduringabriefHousedebateFriday.
TheSenatesuccessionbillmovedthroughtheLegislatureatatimeofpendingtransitionforthe82-year-oldMcConnell.InFebruary,thevenerableKentuckysenatorannouncedhewillstepdownfromhislongtimeSenateleadershippositioninNovember.
